Tenerife – Costa Adeje

In the nineties of the last century, people started to develop a new tourist area: Costa Adeje. On the coast, they started developing new real estate projects such as the stately/boisterous (choose what you think) Bahia del Duque hotel, two luxury RIU hotels and even larger hotels that mostly fall in the higher price segment.

With the development of Costa Adeje, the public wanted to be recalled that Tenerife was slowly turning its back on it. With success, because Costa Adeje has become one of the most popular resorts on the sunny south side of the island of Tenerife.

The strength of the success lies mainly in the fact that the cheap accommodations, catering establishments and shops have actually managed to exclude them. There is a kind of enclave of tourists that has more to much more to spend than the average tourist who flies to Tenerife.

Nice seaside resort in Tenerife South

Costa Adeje has matured completely after a start-up time of around 15 years. Virtually all of the undeveloped plots of land have been neatly filled. The pedestrian boulevard along the sea and beaches is in top condition and provided with beautifully mature flora.

The shopping centers are almost entirely filled with stores. You notice that some of the companies that were originally located here did not make it. The global crisis that struck around 2008 has certainly had an effect on the spending patterns of tourists in Costa Adeje.

The seriously rich continued to spend their money, but it was noticeable that the people who did have an above-average income started to keep spending somewhat under control. However, there is also room for, a store that focuses purely on fashion for Russian ladies. It is about the more striking prints in combination with models that Dutch or German women, for example, quickly regard as too striking.

Usual Visitors

With Russians, an important group was immediately mentioned who visit Costa Adeje. Together with the Germans, they form a reasonable part of the group of tourists who come to celebrate their holiday here.

Nationalities that you also see quite a lot here are Belgians, Dutch, Spaniards and English. In comparison to Playa de las Americas, Costa Adeje has an audience that is on average richer and older. Families with children are less likely to find here than in the other seaside resorts.

That has absolutely nothing to do with not being suitable as a destination for children, but especially with the fact that it can certainly be a costly affair for a family with children to spend their holidays here. On spending the night on Costa Adeje is simply a price tag that is on average higher than elsewhere on Tenerife.

Shopping in Tenerife

The largest shopping center is Plaza del Duque, which with its round shape forms a fairly striking heart within Costa Adeje. During the day it is fairly quiet here, but as soon as the sun sets it gets considerably busier here.

This also applies to the much smaller Shopping Center Mirador. The name Mirador literally means viewpoint and that is what you have here. It is especially the restaurants that are so worthwhile here.

Regarding ambiance, this is one of the nicer places on Tenerife to enjoy a delicious dinner at the end of the day. Paris Shopping Center is a third shopping center. To be honest, we think this mall is not that special.

El Duque beach

The El Duque beach is an important attraction within Costa Adeje. The brownish-yellow sandy beach is surrounded by the luxurious Bahia del Duque hotel, Mirador shopping center and the promenade that takes you all the way to Los Cristianos from Costa Adeje via Playa de las Americas.

On many days the El Duque beach is wonderfully sheltered from the wind. However, there are sometimes days when the wind comes from the south or southwest. Then the sea is very rough. There are therefore red flags on the beach to warn against the very strong current in the surf.

Many experienced swimmers has underestimated the situation and got into trouble due to the strong current.

Traveling to Costa Adeje

If you are not staying in one of the hotels in Costa Adeje you can go to Costa Adeje by taxi, bus or rental car. Please note that parking near the beach can sometimes be difficult. The number of parking spaces outside of the hotels themselves are quite scarce.

Do not think that you just park the car at a hotel. These sites are exclusively for guests and nowadays almost without exception are protected for non-guests.

Holiday to Costa Adeje

When you book a holiday to Costa Adeje you know you are almost assured of a great holiday. This is one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, parts of the tourist areas in the south of Tenerife.

Because this piece was developed later than Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos, much more attention was paid to the quality of the environment. This is a positive example of what a seaside resort should look like.

The Teide nature park with the volcano is not too far away, the busier Playa de Las Americas is within walking distance and anyone who wants to go shopping can go to the better stores. In Costa Adeje you mainly book the more luxurious hotels where you will be spoiled on holiday.
